Mary Elizabeth Walker was the daughter of David Lee Walker and Sara Zarley. David Lee Walker was a descendant of the Warrens and lees of Virginia.
At one time, James Emmet operated the stage coach line between Brownsville and Harrisburg. He was a Councilman in Connellsville in 1875 and also was in the lumber business at the time. James Emmet like those before him, did his part in making history of the community through politics and patriotism. During the Civil War, he wanted to enlist but because he was only 16, his father would not give his consent. He ran away from home to Pittsburgh and enlisted as a musician in the 13th V.S. Infantry. He took part in the Storming of Nashville. He served one year and received an honorable discharge.
Being a Democrat, James Emmet was appointed Assistant Postmaster under President Andrew Jackson. He was elected Burgess of Connellsville for six (6) successive terms and was appointed Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue of the 23rd District of Pennsylvania by President Grover Cleveland. In all of these offices, he served full-time with honor and efficiency. He was best known for his kindness and charity, for his love of travel and for the deep love and interest he took in keeping his family happy. James Emmet died from injuries received in a train wreck while he was en route with his wife for a vacation at Atlantic City.
